Ahold is active in 10 countries worldwide, with renowned brands like Food Lion, Fresh Direct and Giant in the USA and many more local brands in Europe and Asia. They faced the challenge of staff members juggling 9 different systems on bulky handheld devices with lacklustre screens. In today's digital age, improvements were in order. So, in collaboration with Ahold, we devised a solution—a single, user-friendly app that merged all these systems into one.

Introducing WINK, the shop staff app

WINK revolutionises supply counts, checking rounds, and discount processes—making them twice as fast. As these are the most common activities in the store, the app's time-saving capabilities are truly game-changing.

Using WINK, store staff now spends less time doing administration. The result? These employees now have more time to be in the store itself. And that’s where you can really help the customers.

Are there nuts in this bread? Are these crackers gluten free? Before WINK, employees had to use the consumer app to find an answer to these questions. Now, they just use WINK, like they do for everything else.

Store managers gain live insights into store revenue, enabling them to act immediately if any discrepancies arise. Let’s say you get an order of 600 cans of tomato soup which should have been six. No problem, with WINK you can easily remove or adjust the order.

Prior to designing WINK, we engaged Ahold employees to learn about their daily challenges and experiences. This valuable insight allowed us to address unanticipated issues and collaboratively determine the app's functionalities, ensuring everyone was on board for this digital transformation.

With WINK we created an app for employees which had the same high quality user experience as the consumer app. That’s pretty special for an organisation to be able to offer to its own staff. Now, employees don’t have to constantly use the consumer apps along with myriad other systems: they can work with their own comprehensive, fully-fledged app.

Ahold employees are very happy with WINK. Then again, it’s impressive speed gives a feeling of the app working with them, rather than against them. WINK is now the backbone of all 1008 stores in the Netherlands.

Our joint effort with Albert Heijn earned us the Dutch Interactive Awards’ top prize in the Tools category. The jury praised WINK's exceptional design and seamless merging of different systems. According to them, WINK delivers precisely what it promises—a consumer-grade user experience for employees—a fact we’re very proud of.
