A groundbreaking innovation is radically changing public transportation in the Netherlands. In collaboration with Translink and all Dutch public transport providers, we are joining forces to introduce millions of travellers to OVpay, a new payment method that allows you to pay with your debit card, credit card, phone, or, in the future, even with the (new) OV-chipkaart.

Currently, the Netherlands has over 14 million active OV-chipcards, but that is about to change. We have developed a completely new payment experience for all public transport travellers across the country. The goal? Travelling throughout the Netherlands is now even easier. You can now easily check in and pay with your debit card, credit card, or mobile phone.

Public transportation has a wide variety of service providers and service channels. Whether the service is offered centrally, through OVpay, or decentrally, by transport providers, is essential. This must be clear for passengers and practically feasible for transport providers. Instead of determining this separately for each service, we designed a Service Architecture, in which the principles are defined.

To show what certain choices and solutions mean for passengers, we made the concept concrete and tangible right away. This helps prevent any differences in interpretation and allows us to effectively test the concept with passengers and stakeholders. These tangible designs further guide the development of OVpay.
