ROVC is the market leader in offering training and education for technical specialists in the Netherlands. Every year, more than 15,000 people take a practical-oriented course at ROVC with the goal of becoming more efficient, knowledgeable, and qualified.

ROVC asked us to collaborate on developing a new online learning environment for students and instructors. It’s practical and designed with a user experience that ensures better training and learning outcomes.

The needs of students and instructors first

In the first phase, we immersed ourselves in the context of ROVC, the technical courses, and the users. We interviewed students and instructors to thoroughly understand the users and their needs. Additionally, we reviewed the current product and examined the course material. In a product vision workshop, we brought all the insights together and formulated the vision, the shared ambition for the online learning environment.

Structure with meetings

The structure of the course material was originally divided into modules. Lessons and practical sessions are an important reference for students during the course. That’s why we organize the material around the physical meetings, including homework.

Knowing where you left off without pressure

The online learning environment should support the lessons and practical sessions. It is common for theory or exercises to be discussed in class. Therefore, the goal is not to "tick off" all the material. However, we clearly show where the students have left off.

Stimulating with different question types

The existing platform only allowed open-ended questions. The process of assessing questions by instructors and providing feedback needed to be simplified. With eight new closed question types, which are automatically graded, we provide a motivating experience and give content developers the ability to add more variety.

Viewing and reviewing results

Instructors can view the results of their group in a single overview. In addition to the number of correctly answered questions, they can also review the feedback and assess open-ended questions, cases, and workplace assignments, providing feedback where necessary.

The designers at Soda gave us the insight that the online learning environment is often the first thing our students see from ROVC, even before the course begins. For such a calling card, you go the extra mile. With this design, that goal has certainly been achieved!
